Chemical control of dollarweed from residential lawns

Abstract:
Background:
A Hydrocotyle bonariensis Lam. (Araliaceae) is a perennial species popularly known in Brazil as captain’s herb and in the United States as pennywort or dollarweed. It is distributed in the Brazilian territory, with ease of adaptation to varied climates, infesting lawns, gardens and unoccupied areas.
Objective:
Evaluate the performance of herbicides with different mechanisms of action in the control of weed biotypes from residential lawns of the carpet grass (Axonopus compressus), in six neighborhoods of the Guarapuava, Paraná State.
Methods:
An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, using a completely randomized design, with 42 treatments and 6 replications (factorial 7 x 6), being 7 herbicides x 6 locations in neighborhoods, where the dollarweed biotypes were collected. The experimental units were in pots with 3.0 kg of soil and three plants of the biotypes.
Results:
The herbicides 2,4-D (DMA 806 BR™) and dicamba (Atectra™), at the respective doses of 335 and 240 g ae ha-1, despite different action rates, were highly efficient in dollarweed control. Atrazine, imazapyr, carfentrazone and bentazone do not show viability for post-emergence dollarweed control.
Conclusion:
Regardless of the level of herbicide control, no differences were found regarding the origin and location of the biotypes of dollarweed, collected in residential lawns of the Guarapuava, Paraná State.
